On Wednesday, February 20, Wayne Huizenga arrived at Fort Lauderdale Christian School for a meeting with Headmaster Jerry Mitchell and Athletic Director Keith Huisman. The visit was in response to a grant prepared during the summer of 2007. The scope of the grant was to overhaul and modernize the gymnasium that was named after his late father, Gerrit Harry Huizenga, who funded a large portion of the original construction in 1978. After a brief tour of the facilities and subsequent discussion, Wayne Huizenga chose to donate $600,000 to FLCS.
“This is a life-changing moment for the Crusader Community,” said Keith Huisman after the meeting broke. “This type of investment by Mr. Huizenga is an affirmation that God has his hand on our school and that he is able to provide over and above what we could ask or think.”
The first half of the gift is to come later this year. A large portion will go towards a new gym floor that will cover every square inch of the facility. In addition, there will be major improvements to the appearance of the interior, as well as capital equipment purchases.
The second phase will be initiated after extensive planning by the faculty, administration, and the school board.
“Mr. Huizenga had several suggestions for improving key areas of the campus, and we definitely want to take that into account before we make any big moves,” said Huisman. “It is extremely important that we honor his thoughts and suggestions in how we invest his money into the school.”
